Ambisonics Symposium

Place/Dates: IEM – Graz- June 22-27, 209 / Ambisonics Symposium

Description:

Ambisonics Symposium

The symposium was dedicated to discussing the various problems and solutions concerning spherical sound field analysis and re-synthesis (Higher Order Ambisonics). Furthermore, strategies and guidelines for the exchange and distribution of Ambisonics encoded material were discussed with a focus on potential standardisation. The Symposium is a follow-up of the Ambisonics Xchange meeting 2008 at IEM, also done for the COMEDIA project. Discussion of a standard of an Ambisonics Format for exchange of Artwork and streaming should be a result. Within these symposium some 3D-Audio pieces where performed, testing and proofing the concept of Ambisonics as a distribution format.  In conjunction with this artist residencies will be done, to explore these issues in art work based projects.

Objective:

The goal was to find a roughly accepted solution on 3D-Audio dissemination for files and streams based on Ambisonics. Therefore, example artwork in Ambisonics format was presented and streamed at the Ambisonics Concert Hall CUBE at IEM and at the Medienkunstlabor at Kunsthaus Graz within a concert and in the context of sound installations. With this meeting, international experts met artists and exchanged ideas and evaluated the usage of Ambisonics for the COMEDIA project and in particular its application in the artistic projects of 2010 where the goal is to convey the impression of the acoustics of one room to the audience in another room connected via high bandwidth network connection.

Results:

During the meeting, the power of Ambisionics streaming 3D spatialized audio has been discussed, implemented and proven to work, initiating new ideas and cooperation in this field. Further software development that had been done for these ideas has been distributed for better acceptance and evaluation. (See http://ambisonics.iem.at/ ). It has been shown, that with these methods high bandwidth streaming events can be done focusing on artistic questions and technical showcases. Based on this work concerts within the Ambisonics domain can be developed for 2010.
