HFMT – Artistic Showcase Event as Seen From HFMT

Place/Dates: HFMT Belfast-Graz-Hamburg/November 4-6, 2010

Description:

Artistic showcase event as seen from HFMT and in coordination with SARC and IEM.

Objective:

Attempt at summing up of CO-ME-DI-A network activities by creating a quasi-standardized performance situation in three different locations.

Results:

The showcase which connected the CO-ME-DI-A partners SARC (Belfast), IEM (Graz) and HFMT (Hamburg), was curated by Pedro Rebelo who grouped the program according to three topics: 1) NetCO-ME-DI-A made up of works created in the framework of the CO-ME-DI-A project, 2) Net 20th Century, classics of 20th music performed over the Internet, 3) and NetPLay, works developed at SARC with a focus on audio-visual representation of the remote participants. In addition : 1) an interactive dance program called “LaserAvatars” organized between the Vienna Music University and the Hamburg Hochschule, 2) the ambulant installation “Wewalktogether” by Rui Chaves (SARC), 3) the three-networked-piano installation “I am playing a piano in one netroom” by Winfried Ritsch.

Various musicians and ensembles (clarinet, flute, percussion, a soloist choir) were hired for the performances. Students and alumni of the master’s program in multimedia composition did the technical setup. There were a total of 48 high-quality audio streams and 5 high-quality video streams in addition to a medium-quality broadcast. Four video screens had be made especially for this occasion with specifications given by SARC, in order to make all locations appear more or less uniform.

The first day, which featured pieces performed by the European Bridges Ensemble and others by was impeded by network issues; therefore the concert was only local, albeit without further problems, and the outcome was gratifying.

The other days were successful despite the challenges that logistics and technology posed. Both video and audio suffered very few technical problems and offered a high aesthetical value to the audiences.
