CO-ME-DI-A

EACEA Culture Project on Network Performance in Music

Making Music in the Global Village Conference

WPlace/Dates: Budapest – 7-13 December, 2009

Description:

Making Music in the Global Village Conference and Making New Waves Festival

The 11th edition of the Making New Waves contemporary music festival and the 2nd edition of the Music in the Global Village conference was organized in parallel and combined into one event, and was fully dedicated to the CO-Me-DI-A project.

The emerging field of network music performance brings up various technical, artistic, ethical and philosophical issues that can’t be dealt with in the context of a typical paper session. The conference attempted to facilitate the intellectual discourse proposing an open structure helping participation and dialogue. The focus was put on a series of critical issues surrounding the theory and practice of networked music through a combination of brief presentations, extended group discussions, and concert performances. At the lectures and discussion sessions influenced by the concerts, nearly thirty of the finest representatives in the field could share their views, critically examine current practices and sketch out the next decades of network music performance. Participants could document the range of current thinking and practice, to identify critical technical, design, and musical issues facing the field, and to imagine ways in which to address those issues.

Objective:

To present lectures, extended group discussions, concert performances and workshops connected to the theory and practice of networked music. Our goal was to create an ongoing, growing conversation about networked music, which would continue after the Budapest event.

Results:

• 7 concerts,

• 2 workshops ending with a concert demonstration,

• video and sound documentation to be used as source material for artistic research in the COMEDIA project,

• a plan to realize a document summarizing the presentations and discussion sessions of the conference.
