Forum IRCAM Workshops (November 2009)

Place/Dates: IRCAM Paris – November 18-20, 2009

Description:

This was the 2009 edition of the Forum IRCAM software and technology workshops. Each workshop includes sessions of new features of existing software programs (spatialisation, motion capture, real time interaction …), presentations by industrial representatives (Ableton…), works by composers using new technologies and practical training sessions.

Objective:

The main objective here was to use the workshops as a real case for testing a new approach to streaming conferences and lectures in real time over the network featuring giving the viewer the possibility of viewing the lecturer and/or the computer screen (using direct video capture technology). In addition, in order to absorb the unusually large audience which the IRCAM Forum event attracted this year, local streaming was done between the Centre Pompidou (where part of the lectures took place) and two halls in IRCAM.

Results:

According to measurement methods, approximately fifty Internet connections were active throughout the two days of lectures. The streaming was proposed via the video.ircam.fr website in three quality levels given users the choice of the bandwidth best adapted to their needs. This enabled Forum members from outside France and Europe (i.e. USA, Japan, Australia, Brazil …) to follow the workshops. Their reactions have led us to re-thinking the future form of the workshops.

The streaming was recorded and will be edited for online viewing.

Target group:

Forum IRCAM participants, general public.

Number of participants/visitors/audience :

• 160 workshop participants.

• 50 average per hour internet connections during two days.
