EACEA Culture Project on Network Performance in Music

Two-Way Network Improvisation

Place/Dates:

HFMT : Hamburg – May 19, 2009

Description:

The event was a two-way network improvisation between Hamburg and Berkeley (Frank Gratkowski, saxophone and Dr. David Wessel, electronics) at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater.

Objective:

Connecting two locations using the audio network software JackTrip and the network video software Skype.

Results:

Results were satisfying. No audio dropouts occurred during the performance. Latency was around 200 milliseconds, but did not interfere audibly with the interaction between the musicians. The event confirmed the reliability and quality of JackTrip. One of the participants, Dr. David Wessel (in Berkeley), was particularly impressed by the level of contact with the remote public in Hamburg.
